Okay, now’s the time to get up and take two minutes to train your dog, can you do it? You’ll be amazed at what you can accomplish in two short minutes!
Pick something you want your dog to Look at. The goal over the next couple week is for them to “find” the object, person, whatever.
You’re going to use the training method of Shaping. Shaping is basically where you think of what your end behavior will be (finding the object) and then you reward baby steps to get there. You don’t tell your dog initially what you want them to do, because, well, dog’s don’t speak english and right now hearing something would only confuse them because they can’t associate it with anything.
Think about it. If I want my dog to find something, the first thing they are going to have to do is know what I want them to find, right? That is the base of the first step. Then the first part of THAT will be to recognize what the object is. So… The first thing my dog will have to do (to understand what I want) is to look at the object and KNOW that is what I want them to be looking at. Make sense?
Reward for every little baby step of looking at the object. You’ll see with Violet in this video that initially she just looks in the direction of the object, and that’s totally fine, great in fact! Once she’s looking in the direction of the object I can start to refine my behavior.
